You don’t need to venture deep into the jungle to see what this biodiversity hotspot has to offer.

Some of our most exciting wildlife observations have been right on the edge of the river near the guesthouse. Trekking for the day is an opportunity to see wildlife such as Orangutans, Gibbons, Silver Monkeys and Thomas Leaf Monkeys and finish the day soaking in our hot natural springs.

Option 1: Full day trek

Itinerary:

Set off into the jungle
We’ll begin our trek by following the river to our first waterfall, where you can relax and enjoy the jungle atmosphere.

Wildlife Spotting
Continuing on, we’ll head to an area known for its wild fruit trees, which increases our chances of encountering local wildlife. In this part of Gunung Leuser National Park, you might see wild Sumatran orangutans, gibbons, silver monkeys, Thomas leaf monkeys, and forest turtles. We’ll also look for various reptiles, insects, and birds, as well as signs of sun bears and Sumatran tiger activity.

Nature and Healing Plants
Our guides, who have spent many years in this jungle, will share their knowledge about the healing properties of plants traditionally used for medicinal purposes.

Lunch Break
After lunch, we’ll continue our trek until we reach Teroh-Teroh waterfall. This spot offers an opportunity to swim in the cool, clear water, providing a refreshing break. You can take your time to relax under the falls and enjoy the looking up through the trees while swimming in cool water.

Deeper into the jungle
If time permits, we can visit additional areas such as the Simolap caves or our restoration area, which offers nice views of the jungle canopy and opportunities for birdwatching.

Return Journey
Following our time at the waterfall, we’ll head back to the hot springs. Here, you can unwind with a freshly cooked meal and share your experiences with the group.

Get a taste of the jungle without trekking for the whole day. Spend part of the day exploring the jungle, part of the day at a secluded waterfall and return to the guesthouse and soak in the hot springs for the afternoon.

Itinerary:

Set off into the jungle
We’ll begin by following the stream as we cross into Gunung Leuser National Park. The trek will take us through the lush jungle until we reach a beautiful waterfall staircase, where we’ll stop for lunch and a chance to enjoy the pristine water.

Exploring Gunung Leuser’s wildlife and plantlife
After lunch, we’ll continue our trek into an areas of the jungle freuqented by wildlife and try to spot some of Sumatra’s wild animals and observe various plant species. Our guides will share their knowledge about the healing properties of many local plants. We’ll be on the lookout for Sumatran orangutans, gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys, silver monkeys, reptiles, birds, wild pigs, hornbills, and even signs of sun bears.

Immersive Jungle Experience
As we trek, we’ll take time to immerse ourselves in the sights and sounds of the jungle. Our guides will encourage you to pause and appreciate the environment, enhancing your connection to this incredible ecosystem. These moments will allow you to observe wildlife and enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings, away from the crowds in a unique opportunity to have the jungle to yourself.

Soak in the Hot Springs
We aim to return to Simolap Hot Springs by mid-afternoon, allowing time for a soak in the hot springs or a swim in the river as we share our experiences from the trek.

You can experience Gunung Leuser National Park without needing to venture deep into the jungle. Soak up the environment without all the hard work - instead walk a little way and set up to enjoy a day looking up at the treetops sitting among the tress, by a river, or by a waterfall.

Itinerary:

Set off into the jungle
Heading out into the jungle from the Guesthouse, we will trek to a special location where we’ll set up our ‘base camp’ for the day. This spot in the National Park is perfect for observing wildlife and birdlife, allowing us to take our time and soak in the surroundings.

Wildlife and Birdwatching
At our base camp, you can quietly watch for gibbons, Thomas leaf monkeys, forest turtles, swallow birds, and even orangutans, as well as signs of sun bears. This serene environment provides an excellent opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the sights and sounds of the jungle.

Immersive Experience
We’ll spend the day sitting in this area, listening for bird calls and looking for movement in the trees. Our guides will share insights about the medicinal properties of local plants, and sharing their knowledge of the ecosystem. If you wish, we can also set up near a waterfall or swimming spot for a refreshing dip whenever you choose.

Meals and Activities
We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and afternoon tea featuring fresh tropical fruits. If you’re interested, we can take shorter nature walks nearby to explore further and potentially spot more wildlife.

Return to Simolap Hot Springs
We aim to return to the hot springs in time for you to relax and watch the sunset over the jungle canopy before dinner.

Approximately 95% of all tourist dollars spent remain in the community. The remaining 5% is used to pay for national park permits which supports Sumatra’s conservation efforts (including our own conservation organisation KPL).
