Preparing to become a volunteer

We provide an immersive experience and we encourage community members to stop by and get involved in conservation - it is important that both our community members and our guests and volunteers are comfortable and respected.

We do ask that you respect local customs and culture, particularly in relation to clothing and swimwear. Please don’t bring bikinis or speedos for swimming when community members are around and if you do have these to swim in, we ask that you wear a t-shirt and shorts over the top. It is also appreciated if you could avoid wearing short shorts so that we can remain respectful of the local culture. We live in a remote area and are not as touristy as other places like Bukit Lawang so life here is more traditional in the village.

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to contact us an ask! We also have a packing list for you to check out as well.

What happens to the volunteer fee?

We are committed to transparency and make a commitment that all of the money you spend at Simolap will stay within our community or support our conservation work. Hosting volunteers requires our team to be on call and we want to make sure that they are paid fairly and that your time is enjoyable.

The fee that we charge covers the costs of food (all sourced from local farmers and local businesses) and our team. Our conservation organisation KPL also relies on tourism and volunteer activities to continue doing their work protecting the park.

If you’d like a more detailed breakdown of our costs and where each dollar of the volunteer fee goes we are happy to provide this as well!
